There’s a lot happening in speech therapy — and you should know about it

December 18, 2025 By Joe Pulizzi

If you follow the news around speech and language therapy, you know the field is changing fast. If you don’t follow it closely, that’s okay. Most families we serve at Orange Effect are focused on one thing: getting their child the help they need.

But 2025 has brought several developments worth paying attention to. Some offer real hope. Others highlight why access remains such a serious problem. Here are a few things you may have missed.

1. New technology is giving kids their voices back

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon released an AI tool that lets children with speech disorders hear corrected speech in their own voice. For some kids, that instant feedback could make therapy more effective and more motivating. Digital and AI-based tools are rapidly becoming part of standard care.

Why it matters: These tools could make therapy more accessible and more affordable…but only if families can get connected to them.

2. Faster progress for common speech challenges

A major study this year showed that children working on the tricky “r” sound improved much faster when they used biofeedback techniques during therapy.

Why it matters: Shorter, more effective therapy means less financial strain and quicker gains in confidence and communication.

3. New research shows speech issues often connect to deeper language challenges

Studies from Purdue and others show that articulation problems often relate to broader language delays. Another study found that children with mixed receptive–expressive language issues made strong gains regardless of the age they started therapy.

Why it matters: Families sometimes wait, hoping things will resolve on their own. The research is clear: early evaluation helps.

4. Trauma and environment matter more than we thought

New findings link early childhood trauma to delays in communication and language development.

Why it matters: Some children need more support than traditional therapy alone can offer, and access to care becomes even more critical.

5. Demand is rising — and access is not keeping up

More children than ever are being referred for speech therapy, especially post-pandemic. But many families still face long waits or no coverage at all.

Why it matters: The gap between who needs therapy and who can get therapy is widening. That’s exactly the gap Orange Effect exists to close.

In short, there’s a lot of encouraging innovation. But none of it helps the families who still can’t afford therapy or don’t have insurance to cover it. That’s where your support makes all the difference.
