I listened to an interesting podcast interview with someone named Chris Sacca on the Tim Ferris podcast (of Four-Hour Workweek fame).
Chris seems to be one of those technology innovators that are in all the important meetings. He meets with leaders at ChatGPT, Microsoft, Google and all the rest.
In the interview, Chris was asked what he thinks the career paths of the future will be. He stated that all those career paths your parents wanted for their kids, accountants, lawyers, even computer programmers, are going obsolete. These are all quickly being replaced by computers.
Chris mentioned that his own growing company has gone from over 30 lawyers to just four in the past year due to advances in artificial intelligence.
So where are the opportunities?
According to Chris, the opportunities are in communications. He believes that people who can communicate effectively with others will always have opportunities. Public speakers, tour guide, ministers, on-site customer service specialists are seemingly the future.
After listening, it almost seems like this is the direct opposite of advice I received when entering college.
So it seems that the initial onset of technology made it possible for people to be more successful, but that road has led to less opportunity.
Someone will have a tough time surviving behind a laptop, smartphone or email conversation. They’ll need to communicate, live and in the flesh.
In-person communication is now more critical than ever, which means we need to identify communication issues earlier than before and make sure there is accessible treatment for all children who need it.
The future seems to be here, and it’s happening offline. Let’s make sure we prepare our children for what is to come.
