The term ‘autism’ is used to describe a wide spectrum of conditions characterized by difficulties with social abilities, repetitive behaviors, speech delays, and nonverbal communication, etc.
It is a developmental impairment that alters the way we see our surroundings. Being autistic myself, I know how uncomfortable or agitated autistic people can get in changing environments and at social gatherings.
For us, life is different from how it is for everyone else. We encounter various difficulties and experience regular anxiety and other things. However, this is not something that stops us from reaching heights. I feel happy that this condition is no more alien to people, and more and more people are learning about it.
According to a report by centers for disease control, an estimated 1 out of 44 children are affected by autism today. If you are also the one noticing autistic symptoms in yourself or a loved one, here is how you can keep a check.
1. I Find It Hard To Surround Myself With People
I can totally relate to how challenging it can get for you to surround yourself with people who are new to you. I even know autistic people who have a hard time being surrounded by their loved ones. If public gatherings overwhelm you, don’t be distressed. Try to spend some time with friends and be patient with yourself. Your feelings are genuine, and it is absolutely fine if you want your space
2. Mood Swings And Emotional Imbalance Makes It Tough For Me To Manage Relationships
Briefing this point, I just want to have a detailed chat with all of you reading this article. I know how bad our mood swings can get and how devastating we can feel at times, but please be easy on yourself. Don’t rush, and don’t crush. Give yourself and your relationships some time. Also, don’t forget to prioritize your mental health. This beauty always comes first.
3. Maintaining Eye Contact Is The Toughest Of All
In my situation, nothing is as testing as maintaining eye contact. No matter how confident I am on my stand and how firm my decision is, I cannot maintain healthy eye contact and always find myself looking elsewhere. Chances are you don’t have it as serious as me, but it can also be vice versa. However, no matter what the situation at your end is, never lose the trust you have in yourself. This self-assurance is a power that not everyone has.
4. It Is Difficult For Me To Speak In Public
Apparently, yes, you can have speech disorders and can find it challenging to speak In front of an audience, and there can be shakiness in your speech if you have autism. It is how our brain receives signals. We are often nervous about speaking wrong and getting bullied. If you are facing this too, my heart goes out to you but remember, you gotta stay strong.
5. I Always Fail To Understand What The Other Person Is Feeling Or Thinking
You can be very empathic, kind, and considerate, yet you have a tough time understanding what the other person is thinking or feeling. It is okay to feel this way. I was writing a dissertation proposal once and did research that autistic people often get numb during social engagements, so it is absolutely fine. You don’t always have to think about what others think.
6. Anxiety And Nervousness Are My Biggest Enemies
Anyone can indeed have social anxiety and nervousness, but only autistics can understand how socially isolated we feel even when surrounded by a huge crowd. The nervousness, anxiety, restlessness, and fretfulness always keep us grounded. The elevated heart rate is all we have to unwillingly become friends with.
How Do I Deal With These Challenges?
The price we pay for being autistic for our well-being is insane, yet things and situations can get overwhelming. In such times what helps me stay sane is mentioned below. You can try them too and drop in comments what works best for you.
● I Keep Myself Distant From Negative Energy
Maintaining distance from negative people has so far helped me to a certain extent. Now I don’t seek validation in everything I do. This was the one thing that took a lot of my time, but it is no less than a blessing when you don’t have people around who are continuously nagging and distressing.
● Therapies Have Worked Best For Me
There is no wrong in seeing a psychiatrist if you feel the need to have therapies. It took me a long time to realize this, but after I consulted my therapist, life has become easier. If you are in the same boat that I was once in, I highly recommend meeting a good psychiatrist. However, remember, the way you need the best dissertation help for your assignment, you also need a good therapist for this decision. Do your homework first before booking your appointment.
I Am Always Patient with Myself and Try to Stay Positive
To maintain your sanity, you must accept the truth and keep moving on. Staying in one place and complaining about your condition won’t help until you aim to make a difference. If anything is making you worry, don’t hasten. Instead, lower your pace, listen to your inner voice, and meditate. The more you will give yourself time and positive vibes, the better you will feel. And please remember, autism is a condition, god forbid, not a disease, so don’t over stress yourself!
