Remembering How Mel Tillis Overcame Stuttering To Be A Country Music Star

October 10, 2019 By Maureen Stanton

Did you enjoy watching Ken Burns’ latest documentary, “Country Music” on PBS? I can’t say that I’m a big country music fan, but I truly enjoyed learning the way that history, culture, and geography have woven together over time to produce what we now know as country music.

I liked learning the stories of Johnny Cash, Elvis, and the Carter Family, but I was particularly interested to learn that one musician, Mel Tillis, overcame a severe stutter to become one of the most famous country music stars of all time. I did a bit of research and discovered this insightful article from Nashville Public Radio. It describes how Minnie Pearl convinced him to speak and not just sing on stage. Doing so launched his career to heights he never dreamed of. I hope you enjoy it.
