Building Speech Through Books

April 28, 2016 By Maureen Stanton

Go Dog GoDo you know that reading repetitive books with infants and toddlers builds language development? Repetitive books are also essential tools for helping children with speech disorders.

“Do you like my hat? I do not like that hat.”

The Child Apraxia of Speech Association of North America (CASANA) states that the “predictability, use of carrier phrases, frequent practice of a target sound (s), and familiar inflection of repetitive books may help to target some of the characteristics often associated with child apraxia of speech” (a motor speech disorder). Reading repetitive books with children increases participation, decreases frustration, and provides speech sound production practice, boosting a child’s self-esteem.

“Hello again. And now do you like my hat?” “I do. What a hat! I like it! I like that party hat!” —
