Where I live in Ohio, many elementary and high schools finish their school year at the end of May. I know this is not the case for everyone, but no matter where you live, summer is coming up fast.
I love summer. I enjoy the break from the rigors of the schedule that comes during the school year. Traffic patterns are different, more kids are out and about playing, and overall the mood seems lighter to me. Plus it is often wedding season, graduation and so many other milestones.
The Summer Break in Schedules isn’t Always Easy
However for parents of a special needs child, the changes that come with a summer schedule may be less than ideal, and not something to look forward to. In some cases children with special needs don’t like changes to their schedule and routine. It can bring on a great deal of anxiety and confusion. Additionally, there is often a change in the child’s services during this term.
Say for example your child gets speech therapy at school. Well, if school is not in session there is no therapy to be received. This can cause a decline in the child’s progress as well as an alteration in their mood because they are having both the change of routine and the difficulty in communicating.
We see several applications this time of year for kids who need speech therapy for the summer simply to keep them on track with their goals and IEP. Consistency in their care is so important for success. We also see applications for summer camps so that the students can continue receiving services and let’s be honest, so that parents can get a well deserved respite.
So as you get ready to make summer plans, keep in mind that while it may be all fun and games for you, it may be difficult for someone around you. Let’s all work together (not just in the summer) to make sure we help our village be successful.
