Finding the Strengths in Special Needs

April 8, 2021 By Pam Pulizzi

Ryan Lowry

A friend shared a great article from the Washington Post with me today.  It was one of those articles that as a mom, had me tearing up a bit. Additionally as a person who is on social media (at least reading, not necessarily posting) I was so surprised not to hear about this sooner.

A young man, with the help of his Dad, created a profile on LinkedIn and after several drafts, posted a letter about the type of job he wants and why someone should hire him. It is a succinct letter asking someone to “take a chance on him” and explaining that he is a quick learner and hard worker.

Of all the things he wrote though, the statement I found the most truth behind is this.

I promise that if you hire me and teach me, you’ll be glad that you did.

Wow. What powerful words. What self confidence without sounding arrogant. What a true testament to his work ethic and desire to be a part of and contribute to society. What great recognition that he has something to offer, but that the employer will benefit as well.

Special needs persons have traits and qualities that are often overlooked. I thank Ryan for penning his letter and sharing it with the world to remind us that we have to find the strengths and build on those.
