There are so many different ways people approach the end of a calendar year. Some spend a lot of time reflecting on the year gone by. Some look toward setting new goals for the upcoming year. Even though that process is different for everyone, the outcomes are often the same. We come up with a “list” of things to accomplish, or habits to start every day.
In speech therapy, goals are set yearly as well, often on the school year start or when the child’s IEP is “due”. No matter when it occurs, it is an extensive process. Much like above it involves looking at how the past year went and what goals were met and what the anticipation is for the next year.
One of the things I have learned is that goals for kids who need speech therapy are often similar among children and simply tweaked to fit the individual. Sounds familiar right? Why reinvent the wheel if it works? Maybe just update it so it works for the vehicle it is being used on!
Keeping that in mind, and looking at my own goals for 2025, I decided to reach out to our board with a series of questions about their goals. The first question asked is simply what is one of your goals for the upcoming year? Check out the replies below with more to come on this topic in our next post!
JP: To listen better. At times I have a habit of thinking about my response to someone, instead of listening to what they are saying all the way through. For 2025, I really want to try hard at listening, with less of my talking and more of opening my ears.
Doreen: I need to purge the excess in my life. I realize how fortunate I am, how much I possess, and how finding places and organizations dedicated to getting everything into the hands of those in need would make a real difference in other people’s lives. Sharing my abundance is going to be a #1 priority, and minimalizing and simplifying seems very freeing.
Jeff: Losing weight. I know, cliche right? But I need to get back to a more consistent diet and workout routine. I don’t like waiting for New Year’s resolutions, because those never last, so I’ve already set this goal, but we’re close enough where it is definitely a new year goal.
Monica: downsizing (much more to come in our next post!)
Tom: To get more exercise. I used to run all the time. Somehow over the last few years I have gotten into a very sedentary lifestyle.
Dana: I’m a big new year’s resolution gal! I have plenty, but an important one for me is on the mental well-being front. As I head into a big year, I am seeking to reduce my stress, practice mindfulness and gratitude, and prioritize self-care. I struggle in this category and feel that this is my year to really invest in a journey of fostering my overall well-being. What I’ve found is that if I don’t take care of myself, I can’t take care of others and I love to take care of others! Spending time with family and those that I love has fallen short as I’m not taking care of myself the way I should be. None of us can pour from an empty cup! To me, this New Year’s Resolution is essential for leading a balanced and fulfilling life. I want to be able to support both my individual health and those around me. This is especially important as I get married this year! Here’s to a year of growth, resilience and self-compassion!
